What video settings work best?

Last updated: January 30, 2026

Getting the right video settings on your GoPro makes a big difference to upload times and processing speed. Here's our quick reference guide for optimal settings.

Quick Reference: Recommended Settings

Setting Karts (up to 60 MPH) Cars (60+ MPH)
Resolution 1440p (recommended) 1440p (recommended)
Frame Rate 30fps 60fps
GPS ✅ Enabled ✅ Enabled
HyperSmooth On (recommended) On (recommended)

Why These Settings?

Resolution (1440p recommended):

  • Race Ninja processes your video at a maximum of 1080p for analytics
  • 4K footage takes longer to upload and process with no benefit to your data
  • 1440p offers a good balance of quality and efficiency
  • 1080p is fine if you want the fastest upload and processing times

Frame Rate:

  • 30fps for karts: Sufficient for slower speeds, saves storage space
  • 60fps for cars: Better precision for identifying braking points at higher speeds
  • Higher frame rates mean larger file sizes but smoother playback

Don't worry too much about perfection: Race Ninja works with a wide range of settings. These recommendations are for optimal efficiency, but we can process 4K at 120fps if that's what you've got.

Just make sure GPS is enabled - that's the critical requirement for lap timing and telemetry.

Why 4K Isn't Necessary

We process all videos at a maximum of 1080p resolution for performance analytics. While we can handle 4K footage, it results in:

  • 4x longer upload times
  • Significantly longer processing times
  • No improvement to lap times, speeds, or racing line data
  • Larger storage requirements on your memory card

If you want 4K footage for video editing or sharing on social media afterwards, by all means record at 4K. Just be aware it'll take longer to upload and process.
