The Race Ninja app is open. Your phone carries the footage, we do the thinking

Yes. The Race Ninja app for iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs is in open beta through Apple's TestFlight, and joining is free. It compresses GoPro and DJI footage at the track and uploads it on an ordinary mobile connection. Race Ninja's cloud then returns lap times, sector analysis and coaching, typically in about a minute per lap.

The Race Ninja app is open to everyone. iPhone, iPad, and any Mac with Apple silicon. It's free to join through Apple's TestFlight, and you can be in it in about two minutes.

But I want to be straight about what it is, because it's not what most racing apps are.

Why it doesn't process on your phone

Most lap apps do everything on the device. That's fine for a lap time. It isn't fine for what we do. A phone in a hot paddock can't run the vision models, the corner analysis and the coaching that turn a session into something you can act on. Not at the accuracy we work to, and not without cooking the battery.

So we split the job. The app is the courier. Race Ninja is the brain. That's what we mean by Racing Intelligence.

What happens to your footage

Your GoPro or DJI records a 10-minute session as several gigabytes. The app compresses it on the phone to a few hundred megabytes, keeping the GPS and motion data the camera wrote and barely touching the picture. Then it uploads over whatever signal the paddock gives you. If the connection drops, it picks up where it left off.

Once it lands, a lot of compute at Google Cloud gets to work. Custom algorithms find every lap and sector. Our own vision models read the footage. The data gets enriched with things like weather and track layout before any of it reaches you. You can put the phone away the moment the upload's done.

The results come back typically in about a minute per lap. Lap times and sectors, your strongest corners and your weakest, coaching notes, and every lap as its own video synced to the data.

Between sessions, not on the drive home

This is the whole point. Upload after practice, look at what the data says before you go back out, change something, go again. Several times a day.

Say you're three tenths down in sector two after first practice. You'll know where and why while the kart's still warm, not on Monday. That's the difference a minute a lap makes.

Getting it

Install Apple's TestFlight app, then open the Race Ninja beta link on the device you want it on. Sign in with your Race Ninja account, or make one. Same account and same plan as the website.

On a Mac you'll need Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 14 or later. Intel Macs can't run it. There's more on the downloads page.

The App Store version follows once Apple signs it off. Your TestFlight install just keeps updating until then, and if something breaks, tell us. Screenshots straight from TestFlight are perfect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Race Ninja app free?
Joining the beta and installing the app is free. Your analyses come from your Race Ninja account, the same allowance and packs you use on the website. A new account starts with a free upload, so you can try it without paying.
Does the Race Ninja app analyse my laps on the phone?
No, and that's deliberate. The app compresses your footage and uploads it. The analysis runs on Race Ninja's servers on Google Cloud, using custom algorithms, our own vision models and data enrichment that a phone can't run at the same accuracy. That's also why you can close the app once the upload has finished.
How long does it take to get my results?
Typically about a minute per lap once processing starts, so a 12-lap session is usually ready in around 10 to 15 minutes. Busy periods and very long sessions can take longer. The app shows each session's status while it processes.
Will it use a lot of mobile data?
Far less than the raw files. A 10-minute session that's several gigabytes off the camera usually compresses to a few hundred megabytes, depending on the quality you choose in Settings. Uploads resume after a dropped connection, so a patchy paddock signal is fine.
Which devices does the Race Ninja app run on?
iPhone and iPad on iOS 17 or later, and Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Intel Macs aren't supported. Windows users can use the Race Ninja desktop uploader from the downloads page.
How is Race Ninja different from RaceChrono?
RaceChrono is a strong on-device lap timer. It does live timing, reads OBD data and can import the GPS from a GoPro file, and its analysis and overlay export run on the phone (its own guide says to keep the screen on while an overlay video exports). Race Ninja does the heavy work in the cloud from your camera footage: lap and sector detection, vision analysis, coaching notes and a video of every lap synced to the data. We found no mention of AI coaching in RaceChrono's official documentation as of 1 October 2026.
How is Race Ninja different from Harry's LapTimer?
Harry's LapTimer runs on your phone during the session, with live timing, engine data from OBD and an online Hall of Fame for comparing laps. Race Ninja works after the session from the GPS your GoPro or DJI already recorded, so the phone doesn't need to be mounted in the kart, and the analysis and coaching come from our servers rather than the phone. We found no mention of AI coaching in Harry's LapTimer's official pages as of 1 October 2026.
How is Race Ninja different from TrackAddict?
TrackAddict records laps and video with a data overlay on the phone, and its advanced overlay work is done in RaceRender, separate desktop software with paid editions. Race Ninja turns every lap into its own video synced to the data on our servers, so there's nothing to install on a computer and no rendering on your phone. TrackAddict does offer live predictive timing on the phone, which Race Ninja doesn't.
Do I need a data logger?
No. Race Ninja reads the GPS your GoPro or DJI camera already writes into the video file. If you run an Alfano dash you can add its data to the same session for engine insights, but it's optional.
When will the Race Ninja app be on the App Store?
Once Apple approves it. Until then the TestFlight beta is the full app, and it updates itself as we ship new builds.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1

    Install TestFlight

Get Apple's free TestFlight app from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad, or from the Mac App Store on an Apple silicon Mac.

  2. 2

    Open the beta link

On the same device, open https://testflight.apple.com/join/3GaYdwZ1 and tap Accept, then Install.

  3. 3

Open Race Ninja and sign in with your Race Ninja account, or create one. It's the same account and plan as the website.

  4. 4

    Upload a session

Pick your GoPro or DJI footage, let the app compress it, and upload. Your laps, sectors and coaching come back typically in about a minute per lap.
