AiM Solo vs Race Ninja: common questions
Is AiM Solo or Race Ninja more accurate for lap timing?
AiM Solo uses a purpose-built motorsport GPS receiver. A GoPro uses a consumer multi-constellation receiver (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou). Both log at 10Hz. For club and arrive-and-drive karting, the consumer receiver is plenty accurate for finding lost tenths. For official timing at national events, dedicated hardware is the safer bet. Most club drivers can't tell the difference in practice.
Can I use AiM Solo and Race Ninja together?
Yes. Mount the Solo for a live timing display on the kart. Mount the GoPro for video. Upload the footage to Race Ninja afterwards and you get the video-locked coaching that the Solo doesn't provide. Some drivers do exactly this.
Do I need to buy an AiM camera for video analysis?
Not if you use Race Ninja. AiM's SmartyCam is quality hardware but the price is serious, often over a thousand pounds new. Race Ninja reads the GPS from a regular GoPro or DJI camera. A used GPS GoPro can be found for around two hundred.
Is Race Ninja a replacement for AiM Solo?
Not quite. AiM Solo is a standalone timing device that works without a camera, phone or internet. Race Ninja needs a GPS camera and processes the footage online. If you want a self-contained box on the kart that just works, Solo is that. If you already film every session and want the analysis layer on top, that's Race Ninja.
