About Erftlandring
This is Schumacher country. The Erftlandring opened in March 1980 on a former gravel pit at Kerpen-Manheim, around 25km west of Cologne, built by the racing club named after Count Wolfgang Berghe von Trips. Michael and Ralf Schumacher learned to race here, as did Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Nick Heidfeld and Sebastian Vettel.
The 1,107m track held its last World Championship in 2001, the famous round where Michael Schumacher raced a 16-year-old Lewis Hamilton and a young Nico Rosberg. For years the land's future was uncertain because of the nearby Hambach mine, until a long-term lease with energy firm RWE was signed in 2021. A full modernisation over the following winter relaid the asphalt and renewed the facilities. There's a restaurant and a campsite on site.
